Tamil Nadu `A' to meet Maharashtra `A'

CHENNAI: Tamil Nadu `A' and Maharashtra `A' will clash in the boys' under-19 final of the inter-State junior squash championship to be held at the ICL-TNSRA Academy courts, here on Friday.

In the semifinals on Thursday, Tamil Nadu `A', with the likes of top India-ranked players Parthiban and Harinderpal Singh in its ranks, proved far too superior to the second string `B' team beating the latter 3-0. Maharashtra `A' drubbed Delhi `A' 3-0 in the other semifinal.

In the girls' under-19 league, Tamil Nadu `A' and Maharashtra have won all their three matches, and when the two meet on Friday for the last league match, the winner will effectively bag the title.

Upset of sorts

In an upset of sorts, Tamil Nadu `A' beat the fancied Maharashtra `A' 2-0 in the boys' under-15 semifinal. Trailing by two games and facing a matchpoint at 6-8 in the third in the opener, Akshay Deepak turned the tables on Mahesh Mangaonkar to win five thrilling games.

In the girls' under-15 category, Tamil Nadu `A' is at the top of the four-team group with two wins from two matches. If TN `A' wins its last match against Maharashtra `A', it would claim the title, and in case TN `A' loses, there will be a three-way tie.
