KOLLAM: The new Chairman of the Punalur Municipal Council D. Suresh Kumar has said that a comprehensive and scientific master plan will soon be prepared for the development of Punalur. At a meet the press programme here on Thursday, he said that the council will give the sanction for the spade work for master plan at the session which follows the maiden meeting of the council scheduled on October 24. At the first meeting of the council, a decision on constructing a town hall for Punalur will be taken up and hopefully passed. The main hurdle to be overcome in this issue is identification of land for the town hall. The chairman said that while Punalur can boast of having the most spacious private bus stand in the State, the KSRTC depot there stands on a bottleneck. There is a need to either shift the KSRTC depot or expand it. Since expansion will be a difficult proposition, shifting becomes the logical option. He said people in the township have lost all hopes that the Punalur Paper Mills (PPM) will be revived. In fact, the closure of the PPM had an adverse effect on the growth and development of Punalur. Mr. Suresh Kumar also admitted that the township was unable to grow in tune with the expectations of the Punalur residents. The new chairman promised an electric crematorium, a solid waste management project and a scheme to rehabilitate those landless persons who had encroached upon railway land and a public park.
