I-T raids on Madhucon group offices

KHAMMAM: Income Tax sleuths conducted simultaneous raids on all establishments of the Madhucon group in Khammam and other places in the country. Ten officials were on daylong quest at the central office of the group in the town. They also raided the granite units and the sugar factory at Rajeswarapuram in Khammam. Group charman Nama Nageswara Rao was away in Malaysia. - Staff Reporter

Medical employees stage protest

HYDERABAD: Hundreds of medical employees held demonstration in front of hospitals across the State on Thursday in protest against the attitude of the Government towards their demands.

G. Ramchander, president, Andhra Pradesh Medical Employees' Union, urged the Government " to restore normalcy in hospitals services" by resolving the issues. - Special Correspondent

Fake naxal chased away

KHAMMAM: A man armed with a gun and claiming to be a naxalite struck terror in Togugudem village near Manuguru on Wednesday night. He fired a few rounds into air and wanted a petty shopkeeper to pay him Rs 20,000. He prevailed upon him for mercy as he had no money on him.

Identifying him as G. Venkanna who had demanded money from him almost the same way, the shopkeeper screamed for help and villagers, armed with sickles, chased him away. - Staff Reporter

BJP councillor jumps to death

Sangareddy: N. Sankar (40), BJP Medak district treasurer and newly- elected councillor of the seventh ward committed suicide by jumping into the Manjira on Thursday night. Sankar was allegedly depressed by his prolonged illness. According to the Pulkal police, the body could not be traced due to heavy current and darkness. - Staff Reporter

Officials transferred

HYDERABAD: The Government on Thursday transferred Chief Executive Officer Ranga Reddy ZP and posted him as Joint Collector, Vizianagaram, vice K. Siddarth Gowtham, transferred. The latter's posting orders are to be issued separately.

Also, E. Yellappa, Joint Secretary to the Chief Commissioner of Land Administration, was transferred and posted as Vice-Chairman and Managing Director, A.P. Backward Classes Cooperative Finance Corporation. - Staff Reporter

Woman ends life

Kakinada: In a case of alleged dowry harassment, Pusapu Kanthamma (22) reportedly committed suicide by hanging herself to the ceiling at her in-laws' house in Kesavaram village on Wednesday night. On a complaint lodged by her parents, the Mandapet police registered a case. - Correspondent

Transfer through counselling

HYDERABAD: The Andhra Pradesh Residential Educational Institutions Society will take up general transfers of staff through counselling from October 29. The last date for submission of applications is October 23, according to a press release. - Special Correspondent

Accord hailed

HYDERABAD: The State Council of the CPI has hailed the calling off of the strike by APSRTC employees following an agreement with the Government as a victory for the united struggle of trade unions. In a statement, K. Narayana, secretary of the State Council, said the Government too responded positively to the employees' demands. - Special Correspondent

Ex-PCC chief dead

HYDERABAD: Former MLA and former PCC chief Mohammed Ismail died here on Thursday. He was 88. He is survived by five daughters and four sons. He served as APCC president during 1972-73. Chief Minister Y .S. Rajasekhara Reddy and PCC chief condoled the death.

CPI(M) stages dharna for house sites

KADAPA: CPI(M) functionaries staged a dharna before the Collectorate on Thursday demanding allotment of house sites to the poor.

The party town committee member S. Magbul Basha also demanded issuance of DKT pattas to poor families living in houses built on the outskirts of Kadapa town several years ago.

He also sought ration cards and enrolment of poor residing in newly formed colonies as voters. Party leaders - Sekhar, Nabi Sab, Chennaiah and Venkatesh - also took part. - Staff Reporter

Man held in excise raid; arrack seized

KADAPA: Excise officials arrested Murali in Raghavarajapet Arundhatiwada in Kodur mandal on Thursday and seized 100 ID arrack satchets from him. The seizure was made by staff led by Kodur Excise CI Suryanarayana. - Staff Reporter

Woman run over at level crossing

KADAPA: An unidentified woman, aged some 35 years, was run over by a train at a railway level crossing near Nandalur mandal headquarters on Thursday. The Railway police said that they registered a case and shifted the body to Rajampet Government Hospital for post mortem. - Staff Reporter

Two more held for poll violence

KADAPA: The Rajampet police on Thursday arrested two persons - Lakshminarayana and Venkatasubbaiah - in connection with a group clash between Congress and TDP activists during the recent municipal elections.

With the arrest of the duo, the police arrested 16 of the 18 accused in the case. Two more accused were at large. - Staff Reporter

Speaker opens Special Olympics

Sangareddy: Assembly Speaker K.R. Suresh Reddy has called for better amenities for mentally challenged persons in rural areas. The Speaker declared open the three-day Special Olympics at Dr. Ambedkar Stadium in BHEL township on Thursday.

Closure of liquor shops during jatara

VIZIANAGARAM: Collector B. Venkateswara Rao has ordered closure of liquor shops in the town and its suburbs from 6 a.m. on October 24 to 6 p.m. on October 26 in view of Sri Pydithalli Ammavari annual jatara on October 25. The Medical and Health Department has opened first aid centres at Dasannapeta, RTC Complex railway station, V.T. Agraharam and Kothapeta water tank area to extend medical aid to devotees during the two-day jatara period. - Correspondent

Water level in Thatipudi reservoir on the rise

VIZIANAGARAM: The water level in Thatipudi reservoir is rising following heavy rain in the last two days in its catchment area. The water level touched 293 feet on Thursday against the full reservoir level of 297 feet. Following alarming raise in the level, the district administration, as a precautionary measure, instructed MROs of Gantyada, Jami, S. Kota and Padmanabham (Visakhapatnam district) mandals to alert people living in low-lying areas. Meanwhile, as many as nine minor irrigation tanks — six in Bondapalli and three in Gajapathinagaram mandal — breached and submerged paddy fields under their ayacut. - Correspondent

Elections to 3 PACS put off

VIZIANAGARAM: Elections to three Primary agriculture cooperative societies (PACS) at Polipalli (Bhogapuram mandal), Jonnada (Denkada) and Jammupeta (Vizianagaram mandal) have been put off in view of reports of possible breakdown of law and order on the day of polling on October 22, according to District Cooperative Officer V. L. Narasinga Rao. Elections to the remaining 29 societies in Vizianagaram revenue division would be held as scheduled, he said. - Correspondent

Police families seek house sites

Kakinada: At a meeting of the families of those policemen killed in combating the menace of extremists, held at the District Police Office here on Thursday, several women have appealed to DIG Eluru Range Narasimhareddy and SP Naveen Chand to provide house sites to them besides employment to their wards. Some of the widows, who were provided with jobs in various departments, have requested the DIG to help them in getting the posting at Kakinada.

Both the officials have assured them of suitable action by taking up the matter with the District Collector. - Correspondent
