State to buy lands for losers under Polavaram canals

Special Correspondent

HYDERABAD: Chief Minister Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy has said the Government will itself purchase lands for those farmers whose lands are acquired for excavation of the canals of Polavaram project.

Speaking to media here on Thursday soon after Mudragada Padmanabham, Telugu Desam leader, ended his nine-day-old fast at Kirlampudi on the issue of payment of compensation for the lands, Dr Reddy expressed happiness that Mr Padmanabham had finally realised how difficult it would be for the Government to pay a compensation of Rs 7 lakhs per acre.

Referring to Mr Padmanabham's demand for Rs 7 lakhs per acre, he said: "We are willing to allow this much compensation but will it be possible for the Government to make such huge payments. A situation would crop up under which the project itself would have to be stopped".

The Chief Minister said the Government had adopted a new policy to acquire the lands required for the irrigation project with a view to avoiding heartburn among the farmers and the subsequent litigation. Under this, the level of compensation payable was finalised with the consent of the farmers. The left bank canal of the Polavaram project in East Godavari district required lands in over 13 villages. The survey undertaken in this regard was completed only in one village.

18 families to lose land

Dr Reddy said the survey had shown that 18 families would lose lands. Out of them, 12 families had already accepted the Government's compensation of Rs 2.30 lakhs per acre through "consent award". It was at this stage that

Mr Padmanabham had launched an indefinite fast, demanding Rs 7 lakhs per acre for the rest of the families.
