Maize purchase centres to be opened

Staff Reporter

VIJAYAWADA: The district administration will open maize purchase centres in all the maize-growing areas on November 1.

District Civil Supplies Officer D. Veerabhadra Rao said on Thursday that the purchase centres would be opened in Jaggayyapet, Nandigama, Kanchikacherla and other towns, where the maize crop was being grown extensively.

The centres would be located at the respective marketing yards. This was aimed at ensuring remunerative prices to the farmers.

Expected produce

Mr. Rao said that it was expected that 35,000 tonnes of maize would be produced in the entire district this year.

He said that 25 to 30 per cent of maize would be brought to the department's purchase centres. The Government had fixed Rs. 540 per quintal as minimum support price.

Mr. Rao said that the marketing and the Civil Supplies Departments were taking all steps to ensure that minimum support price was made available to all farmers by ensuring effective functioning of the purchase centres.

The farmers should avail themselves of the centres and they should not contact middlemen. The Government had set several standards and permitted maize having less than 14 per cent moisture.

Mr. Rao pointed out that many facilities like drying machines would be created at the purchase centres so that the farmers would not face any problem.

He said that production of maize had increased in Jaggayyapet and Kanchikacherla areas this year.
