Siblings drowned in temple pond

KOLLAM: Unnikrishnan, 12, and Ananthakrishnan, 11, brothers, drowned in the Sri Boothanatha Temple pond at Thazham in Chathannur on Thursday afternoon. The children, along with three other students from Chathannur Government High School, had gone for a swim in the pond. There were no classes in school because of the annual arts festival. The other children cried for help when the brothers began drowning. A few workers from a construction site nearby rushed to the scene and recovered the bodies. The siblings were declared dead on arrival in a private hospital at Kottiyam. Their mother is Vijayakumari. The children's father committed suicide two years ago. The police said the bodies would be handed over to relatives after post-mortem on Friday. The Chathannur Police have registered a case. — Staff Reporter

Bail denied to Binish

THRISSUR: Judicial First Class Magistrate of Chavakkad K. Mohandas on Thursday denied bail to Binish, Managing Director of the Himalaya Group of finance company and the key accused in the Kanichikulangara murder case. Binish, already a remand prisoner in Alappuzha, was produced before the magistrate in a case filed by a group of depositors in the Chavakkad branch of the Himalaya group. The magistrate remanded him to judicial custody in this case till October 31. - Staff Reporter

DALA award for Gaddika artiste

KANNUR: P.K. Kalan, veteran Gaddika artiste, has been selected for this year's Dubai Arts Lovers' Association (DALA) award. The award was announced by DALA convener I.V. Das at a press conference here on Thursday. The award carries Rs.50,000. Social critic Sukumar Azhikode and poet O.N.V. Kurup were the earlier winners of the award. Mr. Kalan is the `moopan' (chief) of the Adiyar tribals in Thirunelli panchayat in Wayanad.

He is often described as mobile history of the Adivasi culture. Gaddika belongs to the ancient Adivasi culture. Mr. Kalan revived the art form which was about to be extinct. He was a member of the first Wayanad District Council and served as president of the Mananthavady block panchayat. - Staff Reporter

Special trains to be run

Thiruvananthapuram: Southern Railway will run three special trains between Nagercoil and Chennai Egmore to clear the extra rush of passengers.

The 612 Nagercoil-Chennai Egmore Special will leave Nagercoil at 7.30 p.m. on November 1 and November 3 to reach Chennai Egmore at 9 a.m. the next day. The 628 Nagercoil-Chennai Egmore Special will leave Nagercoil at 7.30 p.m. on November 2 and November 4 to reach Chennai Egmore at 9 a.m. the next day.

The 610 Nagercoil-Chennai Egmore Special will leave Nagercoil at 7.30 p.m. on November 6 and will reach Chennai Egmore at 9 a.m. the next day. - Staff Reporter

KSEB tsunami relief

KOLLAM: Tsunami relief programmes estimated at Rs.68 lakhs have been effected by the Kollam circle of the Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) at Alapad. Electricity connections were provided to all those who had sought them. 150 new connections were granted. Fresh 11-kV lines were drawn for a distance of 2.7 km, five new transformers were installed, 6 km of low-tension lines were drawn and 730 streetlights were put up, a statement from KSEB here on Thursday said. — Staff Reporter

KOLLAM: The Bank Employees Entertainment Society is organising a saxophone concert by Chennai G. Ramanathan on October 22.

Dharna

KOTTAYAM: The Kerala Congress(S) will take out a farmers march and stage a dharna in front of the Kottayam Collectorate on Monday in protest against the `anti-farmer' policies of the UDF Government, party leader Jacob Thomas Arikupuram said. The party had submitted a charter of demands to the State Government and so far, no action had been initiated on the demands, he said. The State secretariat meeting of the party will be held on Monday afternoon at the State committee office, he said.

Awareness class held

THRISSUR: The Railway Medical Department, Thrissur, on Thursday conducted a class to create awareness among the staff of the Railways and canteen on the hazards of plastic materials on the railway station premises. Environmental engineer T.A. Thankappan Station manager Joseph Ninan, railway district medical officer Frank Amal and Bhasan of Siddha Samadhi Yoga were among those who spoke. - Staff Reporter
