Women activists seek action against erring policemen

Staff Reporter

MUMBAI: Two days after a constable allegedly raped a minor, and another constable sexually abused a bar dancer, activists from women's groups demonstrated before the office of the Director General of Police here on Thursday. A delegation of 13 women, including Ahilya Rangnekar and Flavia Agnes, met DG Dr. P S Pasricha, who promised to take action.

Head Constable Chandrakant Pawar, 45, allegedly raped a 15-year-old rag picker, while he was on duty near the Sahar Road Taxi Stand near the airport in the western suburb of the city. He was also drunk, passers-by claimed. The constable was arrested, suspended and sent to police custody till October 25. In another incident in Navi Mumbai, police constable Hameed Nazir Kazi of Nerul Police station, allegedly abused a bar dancer sexually. He, along with some companions threatened her that he would have her thrown out of Mumbai, as she was a Bangladeshi.

The activists from organisations such as the All India Democratic Women's Association (AIDWA), Akshara, Awaaz-E-Niswaan, Bhartiya Mahila Federation, Swadhaar, YWCA, Mumbai, Majlis, and Forum Against Oppression of Women presented a memorandum to the DG. They listed cases of police personnel involved in crime against women in the last six months, including the Marine Drive rape case.
