CHENNAI : Manasi gushes when she's on the topic of her week at sea. You can't blame her, there's got to be a charm to reading the metaphysical poets on the high seas with hundreds of foreigners.

The 19-year-old English Literature student from Stella Maris College is back from eight days on board the SS Universe Explorer, a ship in which students enrolled at the University of Pittsburgh, USA, spend a semester at sea. She joined the party from Mauritius, their previous port of call before India.

She and Churchpark Presentation Convent student Sindhiya were chosen by Rotary International District 3230 to be part of the inter-port programme.

The ship carries 650 students enrolled at the university to 11 ports around the world. There are also 125 faculty members and 200 other staff. The journey is equivalent to a semester at the college. The Rotary Club started the inter-port programme a few years ago. The club has been involved in the project since 1992 at each port of call, and a few years ago, they decided to sponsor two students from each of their districts. Not only is it an invaluable experience as Manasi points out, it's also useful for the students as it helps to have a local from their next port of call answer their questions. Manasi says her general knowledge about India wasn't really put to the test as their questions were very general -- curiosity about the kind of colleges in India, the languages and general way of life.

Members of the Rotary Club in their homes are hosting the 30 students, who will be spending four days in Chennai. Their next port of call is Hong Kong.
