MANGALORE: Drug addiction is a social malady; it has the potential to wreck an individual mentally and economically and make him a social outcaste. If this is to be controlled society should unite to fight the drug mafia in every city, town and village, Inspector General of Police Western Range Suresh Babu said on Thursday. Delivering the inaugural address at the "Awareness workshop on addiction management" organised under the aegis of the M.V. Shetty College at Kulur near here by the Link De-addiction and Counselling Centre, Mr. Babu condemned those who force youngsters into the habit of drugs which is "nothing short of the most heinous crime that can be committed against a human being". He appealed to students, parents and teachers to help the police fight the drug mafia. He said students, parents and teachers are the eyes and ears of society, he added. He also warned that those who promote drug trade, either by use or by transportation are liable to face punishment, and in some cases the death penalty under the Narcotic Substances Act. He said if the narcotics trade is allowed to continue, there will emerge a new breed of anti-social elements "narco terrorists" . Others who spoke on the occasion included academic administrator of the college Shivarama Shetty and Chairman of the M.V. Shetty group of institutions M.R. Shetty.
