CHENNAI: Jaya Group of Colleges signed a MoU with Korea's oldest University Chonbuk National University, Seoul on Monday.

Chairman of the group A. Kanagaraj and Lim Jae Kyoo from Chonbuk University signed the MoU in the presence of faculty from the colleges and members of the media.

    Sharing of students

The MoU will include sharing of students and faculty between the two institutions. Mr Kanagaraj said that initially it would be restricted to the Mechanical Engineering course. "Later, if both parties agree, we will sign an MoU for other subjects, especially aerospace engineering as we are starting this course at Jaya Engineering College next year," he said.

He also expressed interest in Agricultural Science, and said the Korean University has a separate department for this.

Mr. Kyoo said Chonbuk University was established in 1947. It has 20,000 students and 1,500 faculty members. There are 170 international students enrolled at the college currently. Jaya Group of Colleges is affiliated to Anna University.

The MoU aims at collaborative teaching, training and "student exchanges for education, training, internship, participation in live projects and cultural enrichment". Mr. Kyoo and a representative of Kunsan National University Im Chan Kim said that they see a stint in India as a good way for their Korean students to learn English. Students who go to Chonbuk as part of the six-month programme will also learn basic Korean. The idea is to get exposure to different cultures, said a member of the Jaya college faculty. Mr. Kanagaraj also said there was much to be learnt from the Korean emphasis on manufacturing.

The Jaya Group is also trying to tie up with companies in Chennai to provide the students in-plant training during their internships.

The agreement between the two institutions is for five years and may be extended by mutual agreement.

    Fourth MoU

This is the fourth MoU signed by Jaya Group of Colleges with foreign educational institutions. They also have similar agreements with institutions in South Africa, Denmark and the American Academy of Financial Management.
