CHENNAI: The heavy rain on Wednesday night led to widespread precipitation in all the drinking water storage points in and around the city.

Nungambakkam received over 3 cm rain, while Meenambakkam recorded nearly 3.5 cm in the 24 hours ending 8-30 a.m. on Thursday. The latter recorded nearly 2 cm during the day on Thursday, though the city received only little rain.

However, the suburban and outlying areas received substantial rain.

Tambaram and Chembarampakkam recorded nearly 5 cm rain since Wednesday night, while Korattur and Poondi had nearly 5.5 cm precipitation.

This led to a comparatively good inflow into the city reservoirs: Poondi, which is storing the inflow from Kandaleru, had 373 million cubic feet of water on Thursday. The inflow went up from 340 million cubic feet of water per second on Tuesday to 593 cusecs on Thursday due to water flowing in from its catchment area.

Red Hills too recorded an inflow of about 170 cusecs on Thursday thanks to nearly 4.4 cm rain. The other drinking water storage point at Chembarampakkam tank recorded an inflow of 208 cusecs during the same period, due to overnight rain(over4.7 cm.)

The other areas that received good rain included Cholavaram (3.9 cm) and Korattur 5.4 cm.
