Tuticorin villagers stage protest

Special Correspondent

CHENNAI: People from Kongarayakurichi and Aarampannai villages in Tuticorin district staged a demonstration near the State Guest House here on Thursday, protesting against "indiscriminate sand quarrying" in and around the villages, which, they said, would destroy the sources of drinking water and irrigation.

As the wells supplying water to Karungulam, Moolakaraipatti, Kongarayakurichi, Sattankulam and Aarampannai were located in the two villages on the Tamiraparani bank, quarrying posed a threat to drinking water schemes. Large-scale quarrying had affected farming in the area, they said.

R.Nallakannu, Central Executive Committee member of the Communist Party of India, greeted the villagers who participated in the demonstration. He also spoke in support of their demands.
