Congress not giving Vanniyars their due, says Ramamurthy

S. Vydhianathan

"Their loyalty to the party has not been rewarded"

CHENNAI: The former Tamil Nadu Congress Committee president, Tindivanam K. Ramamurthy, has criticised the All-India Congress Committee and the State unit for "systematically denigrating Vanniyar community."

The community men have been "neglected, humiliated and insulted by the party." Despite being loyal to the organisation, the Vanniyars were not given proper representation at various levels. He said there was a time when the community had a good number of MPs and MLAs. But at present, it did not have a single party MP or MLA.

When the community men represented the issue to high command representatives during their visit to the State in the last Lok Sabha elections, they were requested not to precipitate the issue as it would jeopardise the party's prospects.

He said that it was unfortunate that constituencies where the community has a substantial population were handed over to other alliance parties or the party ticket was given to non-Vanniyars.

He said Salem and Mayiladuthurai, where Vanniyars had a substantial percentage, were given to partymen who were not Vanniyars. Even after the election, the high command's step motherly attitude towards the community continued, he said. For example there were hardly five AICC members belonging to the community out of 91 selected from the State.

He reminded the party high command that the community stood with the party at times of crisis. Their loyalty, he regretted, had not been rewarded.
