Fifth international meet on AIDS commences

Special Correspondent

MGR Medical varsity's efforts to serve poor patients hailed

CHENNAI: Transfer of knowledge in the HIV/AIDS sector is the critical success factor and would have to be examined in terms of skills and applied learning, Health Minister Thalavai Sundaram said on Thursday.

Knowledge transfer was a key issue that had to be paid attention by all those working in the health sector, especially HIV, the Minister said at the inaugural of the fifth International Conference on AIDS India, organised by the department of Experimental Medicine, Tamil Nadu Dr. MGR Medical University. He hinted that public-private partnership that had taken off in a big way in Tamil Nadu is part of the process of knowledge transfer.

Mr. Sundaram appreciated the efforts taken by the varsity in serving poor persons living with HIV/AIDS in Namakkal district, commending them specially for contributing to the increase in awareness in the community in that district. He also outlined the activities of the other wings of the State government handling HIV/AIDS, including the Tamil Nadu AIDS Control Society, AIDS Prevention and Control Project of the Voluntary Health Services and the Chennai Corporation AIDS Control Society. The state was paying equal attention to both prevention and care aspects, apart from promoting research and development and spreading awareness about the condition. On the occasion, the minister released a booklet, which is a compilation of Tamil Nadu's efforts in HIV/AIDS prevention and care.

Bjorn Melgaard, Director, Programme Management, World Health Organisation (SEARO) also stressed on the importance of documenting research work and disseminating information. Sharing the research findings was very important in the health sector, he added.

Craig McClure, Executive Director, International AIDS Society, spoke about the need to involve the community in any activity to fight HIV/AIDS. It was not sufficient to provide token representation, but the involvement of powerful representatives of the community in programmes must be encouraged.

C.V. Bhirmanandam, Vice-Chancellor of the varsity gave away Lifetime Achievement awards to five professionals for their significant contributions to the sector: Jack Whitescarver, director, Office of AIDS Research, National Institutes of Health, Donald E. Messer, Head, Centre for Church and Global AIDS, Denver, US, Henry Gabelnick, WHO Consultant on microbicide research, N.S. Murali, secretary, Voluntary Health Services and Robert Schooley, professor and head, Division for Infectious Diseases, University of California, San Diego. N.M. Samuel, chairperson, explained the theme of the conference.
