Engineering students to launch stir

Staff Reporter

KOCHI: Students of the Mechanical Engineering Division of the Cochin University of Science and Technology have decided to launch an agitation in protest against what they call the lack of laboratory facilities on the campus.

The latest incident that has sparked off the protest is the alleged delay in the release of funds for the completion of a thermal-engineering laboratory on the campus. Students are now taken to other colleges for laboratory work.

According to a press release by the students, the university authorities have also not sanctioned the Rs. 1 lakh required for conducting the laboratory work in M.A College, Kothamangalam, though the current semester is ending soon. The examinations are to be held in the second week of November.

The release says that the work on the laboratory on the campus is 80 per cent complete. The contractor has not received funds from the university authorities for finishing it. This situation has come at a time when the authorities are making efforts to upgrade the varsity into an Indian Institute of Technology.

The delay in conducting laboratory work has put the students who have received campus placements in a fix. If the laboratory work is not conducted in time, the offers may be cancelled, the release adds.
