KPCC silent on row over World Bank report

Bangalore: The Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) has chosen to be silent on the row involving Chief Minister N. Dharam Singh and Maharashtra Governor and former Chief Minister S.M. Krishna on the issue of utilisation of World Bank funds for projects in the Public Works Department.

Mr. Singh has said he is ready to face an inquiry into the utilisation of World Bank funds when he was the Public Works Minister as suggested by Mr. Krishna in a television interview on Monday.

KPCC spokesman V.S. Ugrappa, MLC, said the party will discuss the matter and take a decision. — Special Correspondent

74 leprosy hospitals get grants

BANGALORE: Indian Development Foundation grants totalling Rs. 45 lakhs were distributed to representatives from 74 leprosy hospitals by Joint Director of Leprosy and Blindness B.S. Premalatha on Friday.

Ms. Premalatha also presented awards to 16 schools in the State for their work in creating awareness about leprosy. — Staff Reporter

CNC members to observe satyagraha

Bangalore: Members of the Codava National Council (CNC) will observe a daylong satyagraha on Monday in Bangalore to press for various demands, including declaration of Codavas as a primitive tribe, constitutional guarantee for customary laws and creation of a Codava Autonomous Region.

CNC Secretary-General N.U. Nachappa told presspersons here on Friday that the satyagraha will be observed in front of the Mahatma Gandhi statute next to Cubbon Park.

"Our demand is for according special status to the Codava community and the Codava region under Article 371 of the Constitution, and we no longer demand separate statehood," Mr. Nachappa said. — Staff Reporter

Workshop for orthopaedic surgeons

BANGALORE: Manipal Hospital is conducting an international "Shoulder Workshop" on Saturday and Sunday. Over 150 orthopaedic surgeons from across the country are expected to take part in the workshop.

The workshop will cover biomechanics, rehabilitation and recent advances in shoulder surgery. Two live surgical procedures — Bankart Repair and Arthroscopic Subacromial Decompression — will be performed during the workshop, a press release said. — Staff Reporter

AITUC State, national conventions

MANGALORE: The 38th national convention of the All-India Trade Union Congress (AITUC) will be held in New Delhi from November 26 to 30. A press release from S. Chandappa Anchan, General Secretary of the Dakshina Kannada and Udupi District Committee of the AITUC here on Friday said that the eighth State convention of the AITUC will be held from November 5 to 8 in Bellary.

As a precursor to the State and national conventions, the district committee has decided to organise a Dakshina Kannada and Udupi district convention at Kodiyalbail here on Sunday. H.R. Sheshadri, Vice-President of the AITUC State Committee will inaugurate the convention. Senior labour leaders from the district, namely Simpson Soans, B.V. Kakkilaya and P.M. Narayana Murthy will participate in Sunday's convention. — Staff Correspondent

Appointed honorary president of institute

BANGALORE: The former Chief Secretary S.B. Muddappa has been appointed honorary president of J.S.S. Training Institute for Civil Service Examination here. He succeeds the noted economist D.M. Nanjundappa, who passed away last month. Mr. Muddappa is also co-president of the development committee of J.S.S. institutions. — Special Correspondent

`File objection'

MYSORE: The Association of Concerned and Informed Citizens of Mysore has urged people to file objection against the proposed hike on property value by the State Government. In a press release, it has appealed to the people to assemble at the Sub-registrar's office at Madhwesha Complex opposite People's Park at 10 am to file objections. If the new rates ranging between 25 per cent and 600 per cent are introduced, the property tax will increase by four times.

MYSORE: Lions Club of Mysore and Lions Club of Mysore Classic will organise peace poster contest for children aged between 11 and 13.

According to a press release, participants have to interpret the theme, "Peace without border," using any medium such as charcoal, crayon, pencil or paint, related to their lives and culture.

NSS camp

MYSORE: Students of the Government Pre-university College, Krishna Raja Sagara, attended a special NSS camp at Mogarahalli village recently. According to a press release, during the camp they built a 100-metre road and cleared 150 metres of storm water drain and removed parthenium and painted an anganwadi kendra. A free medical camp in association with Lions Club of Mysore North was also held for villagers. College Principal Balraj and NSS Officer C.R. Tributes paid

SHIMOGA: Tributes were paid to police personnel who died on duty at a function here on Friday to mark Police Martyrs Day. The Deputy Commissioner, T.K. Anil Kumar, said that it was the responsibility of society to take care of the dependents of policemen and officers who died while discharging duties. He also asked the dependents of the martyr policemen not to be disheartened by the difficulties. — Special Correspondent

Man killed in accident

HASSAN: Ganesh of Attihalli village in Sakleshpur taluk was killed when the motorcycle on which he was riding collided with a Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) bus on Friday. According to the police, Ganesh was going to Attihalli from Sakleshpur when he hit the KSRTC bus. — Staff Correspondent

Murdered

HASSAN: Ravi (32), a resident of Sooranayakanahalli, reportedly murdered his wife Shobha (29) and committed suicide on Thursday night. According to Halebeed police, who have registered a case said that, husband and wife quarrelled over a frivolous issue and Ravi hit shobha with a wooden pestle and killed her.

He reportedly committed suicide by hanging himself from a tree in Hirihalli.

Power shutdown

BELLARY: Due to the replacement of 11-kv line near Vijayanagar Engineering College, there will be no power supply in parts of Bellary between 9 a.m. and 7 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday, a release said.

The areas that will be affected are: Car street, Kulumi Chowk, Flower Street, Big Market, Mariswamy Mutt, Kambli Bazar, Rangappa Street, Somadri Street, Miller Pet, VIMS Hospital, Engineering College, Vidyanagar, Soudagar Colony, Hospet Road, Fort area, Polytechnic, Karimaremma Colony, KHB Colony, and Sanjay Gandhi Nagar, according to H. Snakebite

Raichur: Hanmesh, son of Verpanna, died on the spot when a snake bit him in a field near Eralgadda village of Manvi taluk on Wednesday. The Manvi Police have registered a case.

In another incident, Thimmamma, wife of Gangappa, died after she was bitten by a snake while she was working in a paddy field near Sangeeta Camp in Sindhanur taluk on Wednesday.

HUBLI: The sixth State-level Conference of Canara Bank Employees Union (CBEU) will be held in Hubli on October 22 and October 23. Speaking to presspersons here on Friday, B. Devadasa Rao, Secretary of the State Committee, said the conference is a precursor to the all-India conference of the union scheduled to take place in the first week of March in Hyderabad. Nearly 1,500 delegates from across the State are expected to participate in the State-level conference to deliberate on the activities conducted by the State committee, he said. — Staff Correspondent

Belgaum: The Belgaum-based South Konkan Education Society's Rani Parvati Devi College of Arts and Commerce emerged as runners-up at the recent youth festival, Spandana-2005.
