Games Village site shifted to NH-24

Staff Reporter

High noise level, paucity of space at Yamuna bank cited as the reasons

NEW DELHI: The Commonwealth Games Village site on the banks of the Yamuna in East Delhi has now been shifted right adjacent to National Highway 24 as the earlier site near a railway track was not considered appropriate due to the high noise levels there and due to paucity of space. The decision to shift the site was taken at a meeting of DDA on Wednesday.

The decision had been necessitated as the 21-hectare plot on which the Commonwealth Games Village had been planned was not found ideal for hosting the players, coaches and officials coming for the 2010 Games. The site was also not considered suitable for any kind of recreational facility or entertainment.

As such DDA changed the venue to a 16.5-hectare plot in Zone O for which the president of the organising committee of the Commonwealth Games, Suresh Kalmadi, had also raised a demand. Along with officials of DDA, Sports Authority of India and other concerned agencies, Mr Kalmadi had also visited the two sites on October 15.

The Committee had also raised the demand as of the first plot, a total of 41 acres or around 17 hectare belonged to the Irrigation Department of the Uttar Pradesh Government and no agreement could be reached thus far on the issue of its transfer price. Since it was felt that it would take a long time to acquire the earlier plot of land and to start development works thereon, DDA on the recommendation of the Committee decided to shift the village site altogether.

Since the new site is located right on NH 24, it is also more accessible than the earlier one. Further with the title of the land being clear and there being no threat of delays on account of its transfer, DDA can now look forward to completing the construction works well ahead of the 2010 Games. Of the 16.5-hectare area, 11 hectare would be utilised for residential purposes while the remaining 5.5-hectare would be used for constructing hotels and providing various commercial facilities.
