Thiruvananthapuram: The City Corporation will take up a phased programme to crack down on illegal slaughter, Mayor C. Jayan Babu announced here on Friday.

Presiding over a meeting of the Corporation Council, he said special squads would be constituted to check the movement of animal carcasses from the bordering panchayats and prevent operation of unauthorised slaughterhouses in the city.

Mr. Babu said the squads would impose heavy fines to deter illegal slaughter. He also said moves were on to improve the functioning of the corporation's abattoir at Kunnukuzhy. The Mayor, who conducted a surprise inspection of the abattoir earlier this week, said he had ordered the employees to clean up the premises and ensure that the meat was transported in covered vans. The council adopted an official resolution appointing Ravikumar as veterinary surgeon at the slaughterhouse on a temporary basis. The surgeon is responsible for certifying the meat issued from the abattoir.

Another resolution adopted by the meeting urged the Government to remove the restrictions on granting funds in excess of the scheduled rate for public works.

Moving the resolution, Mudavanmugal ward councillor K. Rajasekharan Nair said over 100 projects, including the modernisation of the Thycaud crematorium and the Manacaud market, were held up because the bidding contractors were unwilling to take up the work at the current rate.

Chala councillor Mohanan alleged that the Government's stand on the issue ran counter to the spirit of decentralisation. UDF leader Johnson Joseph opposed the resolution, terming it as politically motivated. He said the LDF could have discussed the issue with the Government instead of going public.

The resolution was adopted unanimously after the UDF complied with the Mayor's request to appreciate the need to highlight the problem and draw the Government's attention to it.
