PANAJI: Goa's sugarcane growers are agitated over the State Government's decision not to raise the support price of sugarcane to Rs. 1,000 a ton. The Government increased the price of sugarcane from Rs. 700 to Rs. 800 following a morcha by farmers during the recently concluded Budget session. But the growers are unimpressed and have said they will not accept the second instalment of payment from the State-owned Sanjeevani Cooperative Sugar Factory. Farmer's bodies point out that sugarcane is obtained from the neighbouring States at Rs. 1,200 a ton by the factory. However, sources in the factory argue that the sugarcane grown in Goa is of a poor quality compared to the cane coming from Karnataka.
