How to tackle noise pollution

Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI: The Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India (ASSOCHAM) in collaboration with Maulana Azad Medical College and Associated Hospitals and Centre for Occupational and Environmental Health, Delhi, organised a workshop on "Noise Exposure and Occupational Health" here in the Capital on Saturday.

Delivering the keynote address, Armed Forces Medical Services Director-General V.K. Singh highlighted the effects of noise on various aspects of human life. "The mantra for tackling the problem is to educate the population, insulate the source and regulate the law,'' said Vice Admiral Singh.

"Long periods of exposure even to relatively low levels of noise can have adverse effects on human health. Levels as low as 60 decibels can be considered intrusive and levels of 80 decibels are considered annoying. Ninety decibels may even cause hearing damage. The effects are physiological such as loss of hearing; non-auditory effects such as cardiac ailments, stressand even memory loss,'' said the chairman of ASSOCHAM's expert committee on environment, Shekhar Borker.
