Hi-tech weaving parks to be ready in six months

The three projects were expected to generate jobs for around 4,000 persons
3,000 new designs of handloom products were introduced for the current festival season

CHENNAI: The work relating to the setting up of shuttleless powerloom weaving parks (SPWP) at Palladam, Komarapalayam and Andipatti in the State would be completed in next six months, according to Minister for Handlooms and Textiles V. Somasundaram.

Shortly after inaugurating the handloom exhibition-cum-sale here on Friday, he said the State Government had obtained the certificate for registering the Kancheepuram silk sarees under the Geographical Indication Act to comply with the conditions of the World Trade Organisation.

On the SPWP project, Mr. Somasundaram said the State Government had already released Rs. 14 crore for infrastructure development in and around the project sites. No other State Government had released funds in advance to promote such Hi-tech handloom parks. Construction of buildings for the SPWP had begun. Official sources said the Centre had accepted the proposals for the setting up of these hi-tech parks at the three centres.
