Thiruvananthapuram: Soaring onion prices are beginning to draw tears even as traders warn that the prices could go up further. Onions were being sold at Rs.22 to Rs.25 in the city in retail markets on Saturday against the normal price of Rs.10 to Rs.11. The prices had been climbing steadily ever since the deluge in Mumbai and other parts of Maharashtra in July. Last week, the prices stood at Rs.15 to Rs.16 but since Monday, onions are being sold at Rs.20 plus. Traders point out that onion stocks are in short supply and that the heavy unseasonal rains in the past two months in the major onion-producing States - Maharashtra, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Gujarat - had affected the production. The supply situation is not expected to improve till mid-November.
