This Day That Age
The two-day conference of Chief Ministers of States ended in New Delhi on October 23, after taking the unanimous decision that interim Governments in all the proposed new States should be formed by the end of October 1956 as a preliminary step to conducting the next general elections in time. The conference also agreed on the elimination of the existing classification of Part A, B and C States and the consequential abolition of the institution of Rajpramukhs and the division of the component units of the Union into two distinct categories, namely, States and Centrally-administered territories. The main conclusions reached were in regard to the time schedule to be followed for implementing the decisions. It was considered desirable that the reorganised States should come into being before 1956.
