dated October 24, 1955: Nehru's advice to youth

Prime Minister Nehru has called upon the youth to develop the power of thinking by reading intelligently. Inaugurating the Second Inter-University Youth Festival in New Delhi on October 23, he said: "I want you to think because in no age in human history is thinking more necessary than to-day. Thinking is always so necessary, but in this age of transition, it has become very essential even for the survival of the nation." Over 1,300 students representing most universities in India listened to the 90-minute speech of the Prime Minister in the newly-constructed open-air theatre in Talkatora Gardens. Mr. Nehru said it was unfortunate that people in India today read extraordinarily little. "Newspaper-reading should not be confused with reading. It is intelligent reading of good books that makes you think. We are living in a tremendous age, and you can fit yourself to live effectively in such an age by thinking and developing yourself."
