Congress sweeps PACS polls in Andhra Pradesh

Special Correspondent

Stray incidents of violence reported from five districts

HYDERABAD: Barring stray incidents, election to the posts of chairmen and vice-chairmen of Primary Agricultural Cooperative Societies (PACS) passed off peacefully on Sunday.

Candidates supported by the Congress virtually swept the first phase of elections held to the PACS across the State. Barring a couple of districts — Khammam and Medak — the Congress is all set to take over district cooperative central banks' chairmen posts in all districts as societies backed by it secured comfortable majorities.

Incidents of violence were reported from Nizamabad, East Godavari, Chittoor, Anantapur and Guntur districts where election of office-bearers was postponed in some societies. Elections to the Nandarada society in East Godavari were put off due to clashes between rival groups of the Congress while a scuffle between Congress and the BJP activists led to the postponement of the Pithapuram society.

The results have thrown up interesting political combination in Medak and Khammam.

In Medak, candidates supported by the Congress and the TRS secured 13 societies each and those by the TDP bagged12 while independents stood victorious in seven. In Khammam, candidates supported by the Congress- CPI(M) combine and the CPI-TDP combination emerged victorious in 12 societies each.

TDP far behind

The candidates supported by the main opposition party, Telugu Desam, lagged far behind even in districts such as Srikakulam, Krishna and West Godavari, considered its bastions.

The Congress-supported societies secured majorities in all the Rayalaseema districts including Chittoor, the native of TDP president, N. Chandrababu Naidu, as well as in a majority of districts in Telangana and coastal Andhra regions. The Left-backed candidates put up an impressive performance in Nalgonda and Khammam.
