MAHE director wants support for SHGs

Special Correspondent

`Micro finance institutions to help rural women'

SAGAR (SHIMOGA DISTRICT): Director of the Rural Development at the Manipal Academy of Higher Education (MAHE) Krishna Koltaya said here on Saturday that it is only through financial support to self-help groups (SHGs) that the socio-economic conditions in rural area can be improved.

Mr. Koltaya was inaugurating the two-day State-level seminar on "Micro finance and rural development" organised by the Economics Department of the Lal Bahadur Arts and Science and the S.B. Solabanna Shetty Commerce College.

Emphasising the need to provide greater responsibility to women in self-help groups in rural areas, he said women, who have cultivated the habit of thrift, should be provided a framework to deal with financial matters. "They may hesitate to take up the responsibility of financial matters because of their inferiority complex, which is a direct consequence of their being uneducated. But they should be encouraged to accept a more active role in them," he said.

Economist Abdul Azeez said more micro finance institutions should come forward to help rural people for proper utilisation of the resources available in their surroundings. He said the self-help groups need guidance not only in the utilisation of resources but also for marketing the products produced by them.

College principal M.C. Komala presided over the inaugural function. Malnad Development Foundation Vice-President Harnath Rao, Secretary M.V. Mohan, Dr. G.V. Joshi of the Department of Economics at the Mangalore University, T.H. Krishnamurthy of the SJM College of Chitradurga, Coordinators of the seminar T.S. Raghavendra and H.M. Shivakumar were present.
