"Army Chief's remarks untimely"

Sushanta Talukdar

GUWAHATI: The People's Consultative Group, formed by the United Liberation Front of Asom, has taken exception to Army Chief J.J. Singh's statement that the militant outfit must lay down arms and come to the negotiating table if it was sincere about holding talks with the Centre.

Gen. Singh's remarks were "untimely and unwarranted," the PCG said in a statement. In view of the invitation already extended to the PCG by the Prime Minister's Office, "it was without jurisdiction" on his part to make any comment on the genuineness of the ULFA's offer for peace talks. PCG members will leave for Delhi on Monday at the invitation of National Security Adviser M.K. Narayanan for the first round of talks with the PMO.
