Cancer detection camp today

Nellore: A two-day free cancer detection camp is to be organised for the police personnel and their families at Nellore from Monday.

The camp will be held at the police welfare hospital, in Mulapet under the auspices of Indo-American Cancer Institute and Research Centre, Hyderabad. Policemen on duty for the co-operative elections, can attend the check up on Tuesday. - Staff Reporter

16 cases disposed off by Lok Adalat

Removal of encroachments

MADANAPALLE: Encroachments on the river bed near Muggurallavanka, Kuravanka and Bahuda, are being removed, according to the Municipal Commissioner B. Nagabhushanam.

The move is to facilitate rain water to flow freely without any hindrance. - Correspondent

Kho-kho championship

Nellore: The 20th Andhra sub-junior kho-kho championship for under-14 boys and girls, began here at Annareddipalem on Sunday.

Water level up

Nellore: In view of the mounting storage of water in Kandaleru reservoir in Nellore district, authorities are now concentrating on vacating the possible submergible areas. The storage level in the reservoir has been initially limited only to 15 tmcft and there is a possibility of submersion of certain areas, in case more water is stored.

Bank staff gesture

TIRUPATI: The women's wing of Canara Bank employees union has distributed six dining tables and 24 chairs to Akshaya Kshetram, a voluntary organisation running a home for special children.

The gesture was part of the diamond jubilee celebrations of All India Bank Employees Association (AIBEA), of which the union is a part. - Staff Reporter

`Pushpa yagam' on November 8

TIRUMALA: The annual `pushpa yagam' of Lord Venkateswara, Tirumala, will be held on November 8 with `ankurarpanam' on the previous day.

According to temple sources, in view of the mega fete, except `sahasra deepalankara seva', all other `arjitha sevas' (paid sevas) will be cancelled for the day.

Devotees can participate in the `yagam' by purchasing a ticket priced at Rs.3,500. Five persons will allowed on each ticket. - Staff Reporter

Mystery shrouds student's death

KARIMNAGAR : An Intermediate second year student died under mysterious circumstances on Alphores boys hostel campus at Kothapalli village in the district on Sunday.

According to the police, Ajay Kumar Reddy (17), an MPC student of the college, was asked by a teacher to stand on the bench for `creating nuisance' in the class on Saturday. Later, he was found missing. He hailed from Peddalingapur village of Illanthakunta mandal. - Staff Reporter

Workshop for women

HYDERABAD : The first-ever `vision workshop' of women's federations under the umbrella of the Andhra Pradesh Mahila Samatha Society will be held here from October 24.

At a press conference, society's programme director P. Prashanthi said that this was the first time a State-level workshop was being organised since formation of the society in 1993 with the objective "education for women's equality." - Staff Reporter

Rythu Sangham charge against Minister

HYDERABAD: The Andhra Pradesh Rythu Sangham on Sunday accused the Cooperation Minister K. Lakshiminarayana of not holding elections to cooperative societies where the Congress chances were bleak.

Round table on Polavaram project

HYDERABAD : The Andhra Pradesh Girijan Sangham will hold a round table on the Polavaram project on October 27 in the light of criticism that the Government is ignoring the submersion of 274 villages affecting 60,000 tribals.

To be held at Sundarayya Vignana Kendram, the meeting will be attended by lawyer K.G. Kannabiran, academician K. Muthyam Reddy and MP M. Babu Rao besides tribals who face a threat to their existence. - Special Correspondent

Woman drowned

Kakinada : A tribal woman, Posam Rajamma (45), was drowned while crossing a stream that is in spate due to heavy rain near Duppalapalem village of Rampachodavaram mandal on Saturday. Her body was retrieved on Sunday. - Correspondent

Rubber foil found

VIZIANAGARAM : The rubber foil that was washed away in floodwaters of Jhanjhavathi on Saturday evening was found by irrigation engineers at Kotipam village, two km away from the project site, on Sunday.

According to officials, the rubber foil was found in good condition on the riverbank near the village. The foil was fastened at the riverbank itself from drifting away in the flood flow and it will be shifted to the project site for installation later.- Correspondent

Rights panel visits Pulivendula KADAPA: A seven-member fact-finding team of Human Rights Forum, led by its convenor K.
