CHENNAI: The Postal Department should re-position itself as a customer-oriented commercial enterprise, R. Ganesan, Postal Secretary, said here on Sunday.

Addressing a gathering of officials of the Tamil Nadu Circle, Mr. Ganesan said though the officials were government servants, their job was not merely a government job.

"We are in every conceivable segment — insurance, banking, marketing, retail and publicity," he said, presenting Dak Sewa awards for 2004.

Good performances

He said that despite being affected by terrorism, Jammu and Kashmir had done so well that it earned back every rupee spent. Haryana and Maharashtra were the other States to receive the award for financial performance. He called upon the employees of other circles to emulate the high-performing States.

Vast network

Vatsala Raghu, Principal Chief Postmaster General of the Tamil Nadu Circle, said the department was well suited to provide a wide range of services as it had a vast network and skilled manpower.

K. Durisamy Seplar, branch postmaster, Perungalur sub-post office (SO) in Pudukottai division; K. Elayan, postman, Kalappanaickenpatti SO in Namakkal division; R. Venkadesan, Development Officer (Postal Life Insurance), Chennai; N. Kanagasabapathy, Assistant Superintendent, Business Post Centre, Chennai; N. Muthuramalingam, sub-postmaster, Rameswaram SO in Ramanathapuram division and V. Jayanthi, Assistant Director (Buildings), Chennai, were given the Dak Sewa awards.

Trophies given

The trophies for `cleanest post office and speed post centre' were given to Teynampet post office and Speed Post business office, Greams Road, Chennai.

They were received by G. Kalyani and A. Thomas Lourdaraj, representing the offices.

Yennam Upendar, formerly Senior Superintendent of Post Offices, Pondicherry (now SSP, Nellore, Andhra Pradesh), was given the award for best overall performance.
