Colleges look for proven aptitude, good GMAT scores for a management course Colleges look for proven aptitude, good GMAT scores for a management course; top ones offer financial aid The Princeton Review is offering coaching for GMAT/GRE and SAT this November in Chennai

CHENNAI: If you want to study or work in the United States, this is probably a good time to make plans.

The job market there, especially in the management sector, is on an upward swing and even top colleges and universities have lined up attractive financial aid packages for overseas students.

All it needs is a little bit of background preparation to get you there.

How to prepare

And tips on preparation were what nearly a hundred students got during the free information seminar organised by the prestigious The Princeton Review here on Sunday.

Even top colleges offer financial aid if you show proven aptitude.

Though it starts after one is accepted by the university, the preparations have to start much earlier, said Nidhi Khaitan, managing partner of the Manya group, the Indian wing of The Princeton Review.

Formats

The formats for the Graduate Management Aptitude Test and the Graduate Recruitment Examinations are due for change in 2006.

The best time to take the tests is this year as next year they will be a little harder.

It is important that students have a consistent academic record and, depending on which university/college one chooses, the criteria for admission will switch between test scores and references furnished along with the application.

Though getting into a "dream university/college" is hard, it is not impossible and preparations have to start at least a year in advance, according to Ms. Khaitan.

Hands-on practice

Outlining the preparations needed for a good GMAT/GRE/SAT score, Kavita Rajagopalan, academic co-ordinator, Manya, said the computer adaptive tests evolved as part of the testing process were designed to assess a student's optimal answering capacity.

At least two months preparation was needed for getting a good score.

Though a low score did not necessarily mean denial of admission, it helped to get hands-on practice before moving on to the real thing, she said.

The Princeton Review is offering coaching for GMAT/GRE and SAT this November in Chennai.

While GMAT coaching begins on October 29 and ends on December 11, GRE coaching starts November 2 and ends December 9. SAT classes run through November 8 to January 21.
