Thiruvananthapuram
Will development issues take a backseat to politics? This is the question doing the rounds as election fever grips the Thiruvananthapuram Lok Sabha constituency. The lock-up death at the Fort police station, the attack on the Bishop's House at Neyyattinkara and allegations of manipulation of the voters' list have hogged the media attention in the run-up to the elections. But concerned citizens, residents' associations and non-Governmental organisations are fighting hard to turn the spotlight on to the development needs of the capital city. The status of demands such as the setting up of a High Court Bench, the development of the international airport and the proposal for a container transhipment terminal at Vizhinjam are expected to figure prominently in public discussions and television debates as the electoral contest heats up.
