This Day That Age
there being no issue of the paper dated October 26:
The Chinese Premier, Mr. Chou En-lai, has declared his support for India's stand over Goa and asked for the prevention of extensive celebrations planned in Macao of the 400th anniversary of the founding of this tiny colony on the Chinese mainland. He told Mr. O'Neill, British Charge d'Affaires in Peking and Sir Alexander Grantham, Governor of Hong Kong, at a luncheon in the Chinese capital that the people of China and the Chinese in both Macao and Hong Kong would be "very displeased" with the celebrations. Sources said Mr. O'Neill reported this to the British Foreign Office which in turn sent a report to the Portuguese Government. The Macao Governor, Mr. J.M. Esparteiro, received a dispatch from Lisbon and cancelled preparations for the celebrations which were to have included a visit from Portugal of leading Government figures. The Hong Kong Governor asked Mr. Chou if the Chinese would still be displeased if the celebrations were confined only to a public holiday. The Chinese Premier at first replied that even this would raise objections, but later appeared willing to concede such reduced celebrations. Mr. Chou also told Mr. O'Neill and Sir Alexander that China supported India's stand in relation to the Goa dispute. The Portuguese colony of Macao is situated on a small peninsula at the southern entrance to China's Pearl River. It has a population of 190,000, about 3,000 of whom are Portuguese and other Europeans. Macao has maintained an uneasy relationship with People's China.
