Defaulting Ayurveda drug producers warned

Special Correspondent

Ensure compliance, authorities told

NEW DELHI: Producers of Ayurveda, Siddha and Unani drugs will lose their licence if they fail to comply with the good manufacturing practices notified under the Drugs and Cosmetics Rules 1945.

The Department of AYUSH, Ministry of Health, has directed State licensing authorities to ensure that manufacturers display on the label of the container or package of their products the list of all ingredients (both official and botanical names) together with the quantity of each.

In case the list is long and cannot be mentioned on the label, it will have to be indicated in a leaflet provided in the package.

The container shall clearly display "Caution: to be taken under medical supervision" if the ingredients contain any substance specified in schedule E (1).

The authorities will immediately cancel or suspend the licence of the defaulting manufacturer.

Testing for heavy metals in herbal drugs has been made mandatory from January 1, 2006.

Manufacturers of Ayurvedic, Unani and Siddha medicines will have to carry "heavy metals within permissible limits" labels on all exports.

The permissible limits will be based on World Health Organisation specifications, except for mercury which will have to be one part per million (ppm).
