PALAKKAD: Minister for Food and Civil Supplies Adoor Prakash has said that the farmers would be paid the price for the paddy procured from them within 10 days. A review meeting on the paddy procurement in the district was held at the Collectorate here on Tuesday. He said at the meeting that an eight-member committee with the district supply officer as its chairman had been set up to oversee the paddy procurement by the Kerala State Civil Supplies Corporation. The members of the panel include the principal agriculture officer, a representative each of the rice mill owners and the Padasekhara Samithy. Mr. Prakash said that the Government had procured 5.16 lakh quintals of paddy for Rs.35.28 crores last year. The farmers were paid Rs.19 crores and Rs.16.28 crores has to be paid. In Palakkad, 94,644 quintals of paddy was procured last year, Mr. Prakash said. The representatives who attended the meeting called by Mr. Prakash urged the Government to co-ordinate the activities between service co-operative banks and the Civil Supplies Corporation for the effective procurement of paddy from farmers. This will help prevent the exploitation of farmers by rice mill owners, the farmers said. Mr. Prakash assured the farmers that they would not be exploited with regard to the weigh of the paddy procured by the Civil Supplies Corporation. He said that the Government would consider handing over the entire paddy procured from the district to Paddico, a modern co-operative rice mill.
