GEARING UP FOR CELEBRATIONS: The headquarters of the 122 Infantry Battalion Territorial Army in Kannur.
KANNUR: 122 Infantry Battalion, Territorial Army (TA) unit attached to the Madras Regiment, will celebrate the 50th Raising Day at its headquarters here on October 29. Battalion Commandant Col. M. Ramachandran told a press conference here on Monday that Chief Minister Oommen Chandy would inaugurate the Raising Day Golden Jubilee of the battalion at a function to be held on October 29. A.P. Abdullakutty, MP, and K. Sudhakaran, MLA, will participate in the function. Col. Ramachandran said that the battalion would undertake various welfare activities during its year-long celebrations. The battalion, headquartered in the Wellesley Barracks, will help conserve the heritage of buildings in the barracks built during the British rule. The commandant of the battalion said that the TA has come a long way from being a reserve unit in 1949, when it had been raised by first Governor General of free India Rajagopalachari, to a force equivalent to the regular army. The services rendered during the recent Operation Parakram have been lauded, he said. One of its personnel, Havildar Vijayan, had fallen while preventing a suicide bomb attack by Lashkar-e-Toiba on the corps headquarters in Srinagar
