Official gets rigorous imprisonment for accepting bribe

Caught taking Rs. 3,000 from complainant

KOZHIKODE: The vigilance court in Kozhikode, on Tuesday, sentenced E. Balakrishnan, a former extension officer of the Scheduled Caste Department in Perambra Block Panchayat, to three years rigorous imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs. 30,000 on him under the provisions of the Corruption (Prevention of) Act.

Vigilance case

In a case charged by the vigilance police, Balakrishnan was charged with demanding Rs. 3,000 from Cheria Namburath Babu as bribe to pass a cheque for Rs. 35,000 as non-refundable assistance to construct a house under the People's Plan programme during 1999-2000.

On Mr. Babu's complaint, Deputy Superintendent of Police N. Chandran arrested the accused as he was accepting the `bribe.'
