Madurai: There is no denying the fact that `Tirukkural' is the `Veda of Tamils'. It is considered a universal guide to humanity. The profundity of the poet-saint, Tiruvalluvar, is accepted all over the world. Though everyone relishes the essence of the couplets and their poetic brilliance, it is pertinent to know how many do sincerely follow the principles prescribed by the poet. At this juncture, the effort taken by the Shriram Ilakkiya Kazhagam to find a person, who lives by the teachings of Tirukkural, and honour him with an award is commendable. The literary wing of the Shriram Group has instituted the `Aram' award, which carries a cash prize of Rs.1 lakh. The past recipients of the award include G. Venkataswamy, founder, Aravind Eye Hospitals, (2003) and M.P. Vaasimalai, founder, Dhan Foundation (2004). This year, it has called for nominations to this award. A three-member panel, comprising Avvai Natarajan, former Vice-Chancellor, Tamil University, G. Ranga Rao and A.M. Swaminathan, former IAS officers, has been formed to identify the nominee for the award. The panel will confer the award on a person belonging to any walk of life. The decisive factor, of course, will be that the person follows the tenets of Tirukkural as a way of life and has a philanthropic mindset. Those who wish to recommend a person for the award can send details about the nominee and his/her contributions to the society in not more than two pages to Shriram Ilakkiya Kazhagam, Greams Dugar, 5th floor, 149 Greams Road, Chennai-600 006, before November 30.
