ALAPPUZHA: The former deputy director of the Geological Survey of India, Subrato Sinha, has opined that construction of seawalls using boulders along the coastline of the state faced by the threat of tidal attack was a waste of money. Speaking at a meet-the-press programme here today, Mr. Sinha, who is also the former director of the Centre for Earth Science Studies (CESS), said the seawalls were found to have no strength to prevent giant tides from wreaking damage. Mr. Sinha said planting mangroves along the coast would help to control the tidal attack. Mr. Sinha pointed out that the mangroves were found to be most effective in resisting even tsunami.
Sand-mining
Mr. Sinha called for involvement of the local fishermen community of Arattupuzha panchayat in the district in deciding whether mining of mineral sand should be carried out from the coastal areas of the panchayat.
