Gaudio rallies to beat Clement

LYON: Third-seeded Gaston Gaudio of Argentina beat France's Arnaud Clement 6-3, 4-6, 6-3 to start the Grand Prix of Lyon Open on Monday.

Gaudio, the 2004 French Open champion, who has won five titles on clay this year, is trying to improve his record on hard courts. By advancing to the second round in Lyon, Gaudio improved his win-loss record to 51-17.

Seventh-seeded Mario Ancic of Croatia also advanced, beating American James Blake 6-2, 7-6(5) while Novak Djokovic of Serbia-Montenegro defeated Brazil's Ricardo Mello 7-6(5), 6-4.

Mirnyi ousted

In St. Petersburg unseeded Dane Kenneth Carlsen upset third seed Max Mirnyi 6-7, 7-6, 6-4 in the St. Petersburg Open.

Sixth seed Jarkko Nieminen of Finland, a U.S. Open quarterfinalist in September, was another early casualty at the $1 million event, losing to 80th ranked Czech Robin Vik 6-4, 6-4.
