Sathanur dam is near full

Special Correspondent

TIRUVANNAMALAI: There is an inflow of 26,000 cusecs to the Sathanur reservoir in Tiruvannamalai district, which has been receiving water from the Krishnagiri dam following heavy rain in the catchment areas of the latter in the last few days. For safety reasons, the water level in the Sathanur reservoir is being maintained at 116 feet against the full level of 119 feet.

According to sources in the Public Works Department, the authorities discharged water from the Sathanur reservoir into the Thenpennai River at the rate of 32,000 cusecs on Tuesday. The outflow would benefit the 40 tanks in the Left Bank Canal (LBC), covering an ayacut of 24,000 acres, and 49 tanks in the Right Bank Canal (RBC), covering an ayacut of 21,000 acres. The water would reach the Thirukkovilur, Ellis and Sornavur anaicuts in Villupuram district.

Though the discharge of water from the Sathanur reservoir was sufficient to fill all the tanks in the LBC and RBC if rain in the catchment areas continued, the level in the tanks would be maintained up to 50 to 70 per cent of their capacity so that the tanks do not breach when there is heavy rain locally. Against a storage capacity of 7,321 million cubic feet, the present storage in the Sathanur reservoir was 6,657 mcft.
