Chennai: Velammal `A' surprisingly took the lead at the end of the third round of the St. Peter's Engineering College 15th Tamil Nadu State team chess championship at Avadi, near here on Tuesday. Velammal has 11 points. It is followed half a point behind by Southern Railway and 1.5 points behind by four teams: ICF, T. Nagar Chess Academy `A', Indian Bank and Chennai. In the second round Velammal `A' beat Dindigul 4-0 and in the third Salem District `A' 3-1. On top board Velammal's T.U. Naveen Kanna playing black held Asian junior champion and International Master S. Arun Prasad to a creditable draw. In a surprise result of the second round, Kanchi district youngsters R.S. Arun Srinivas, Pon N. Krithika and C.R. Arun Hariharan drew against Indian Bank's International Masters G.B. Prakash, Sudhakar Babu and S. Poobesh Anand. Four more rounds remain. The results: Third round: Salem `A' 9 lost to Velammal `A' 11; T. Nagar `A' 9.5 lost to Chennai 9.5; HVF 7 lost to Southern Railway 10.5; Indian Bank 9.5 bt Kanadukathan 7; ICF 9.5 bt T. Nagar `B' 5; Velammal `B' 4 lost to SRM Arts & Science 8.5; Kanchi 8 bt Thiruvallur 4; Dindigul 5 lost to Thoothukudi 7; Thiruvallur `B' 4.5 lost to Salem `B' 7; Santhome HS 4 lost to Capa Chess Academy 5; Purasai Chess Academy 3 lost to St. Peter's Engg College 5.5; T. Nagar `C' 4.5 bt Velammal `E' 3.5; T. Nagar `D' 2.5 lost to Bloom Chess Academy 5; Velammal `C' 4.5 bt T. Nagar `E' 2.5; Shiksha Kendra Vellore lost to Velammal `D' 4.
