Rural IT Quiz finals tomorrow

The event is the culmination of 27 district-level competitions


  • 65,000 students have participated in the quiz
  • The top three teams will get TCS cash scholarships

    Bangalore: The Rural IT Quiz finals, part of the Bangalore IT.in, will be held on Thursday at 3 p.m. The event, which is the culmination of 27 district-level competitions and six zonal finals, will be hosted for the sixth consecutive year by the State Information Technology Department and Tata Consultancy Services.

    This year a record 65,000 students in 27 districts participated in the programme, making it one of the biggest of its kind. It gathered momentum this month with the top 50 teams for each district participating in the zonal- level finals conducted at six centres from October 4 to 14. The zonal finals were held in Tumkur, Mandya, Udupi, Dharwad, Davangere and Gulbarga. The winners will battle it out for the State championship in Bangalore.

    N.G. Subramaniam, vice-president and head, TCS Bangalore, said: "The consistent growth in the number of students participating each year reflects the interest the quiz has generated and the increasing comfort levels of students with information technology. The average scoring pattern of students in rural areas has been improving each year, indicating a higher awareness of IT today.''

    "The Rural IT Quiz has established itself as annual event and we appreciate the efforts of TCS. Karnataka is known for its IT talent and this event has helped enhance IT awareness in rural areas,'' M.K. Shankaralinge Gowda, Secretary for IT and Biotechnology, said.

    Giri "Pickbrain" Balasubramaniam will be quizmaster at the State finals.

    The six teams that have qualified for the State finals are: Mahesh Kumar B.S and Naveed Abrar, Sarvodaya Pre-university College, Tumkur; Kriti Y.C. and Sneha V., Carmel Convent, Mandya; Sumeet S. Naik and Vigneshwara Poojar, Government PU College, Karwar; Santosh Mali and Nikhil G. Balekundargi, BVVS Polytechnic, Jamkhandi; Anil Kumar and Sridhar, Nutana P.U. College, Davangere; and M.R. Bharath and Gururaj D. Patil, V.B. Durbar High School, Bijapur.

    Teams placed first, second and third will get TCS cash scholarships of Rs. 60,000, Rs. 35,000 and Rs. 20,000.
