A game of cash boxes

<36,2,,,,,,2>"Deal Ya No Deal'', the world's No. One reality game show, is coming to India, and hosting the show will be Hero No. One of South Indian films R. Madhavan. The game show, which gives a chance to its participants to win a crore, claims to be in no direct competition with the popular Kaun Banega Crorepati-II conducted by the Big B.

Sony Entertainment has slotted the show for Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays at 8-30 p.m. It will be a one-hour show with 52 episodes and registration for participating is now on in Delhi, Mumbai and Calcutta.

A combination of a game show and nerve-racking reality series, the rules of the game are simple. Explains Madhavan: "It is a game show and people whom we contacted for the initial phase took to it very well. The contestants face 22 cash boxes containing cheques varying from Re. 1 to a whopping Rs.1 crore. Without knowing the content in each box, he picks one, which he will keep till the end of the show. The box stays sealed, as do the 21 remaining ones that are divided among other contestants. Who's holding the jackpot? Does the winner's box contain a stingy sum or an absolute fortune? Nobody knows! And that is what the game is about.''

No newcomer to the small screen, Madhavan speaking about his second inning of sorts with television confessed to being thrilled with this latest role. "I am really looking forward to hosting the show. My passion for doing something different is what has made me host this show. What is really exciting is the fact that the show will showcase the individual's risk-taking ability.''

The executive vice-president and business head of Sony Entertainment Television, Tarun Katial, said at a press conference here on Tuesday: "We have been a pioneer in innovative and interactive programming. We can feel the pulse of the Indian viewers, which is yearning for excitement and drama. This is a show they can easily relate to. The viewers will experience the same kind of adrenaline rush as the participants. They will experience the thrilling moments and the ups and downs of each contestant.''-- Bindu Shajan Perappadan
