Two killed in accident

HUBLI: Two persons were killed on the spot and five injured in a tractor-car collision on Hubli-Gadag road on Monday night.

The names of the dead have been given as Anasuya Vasappa Hebasur (60) and Babusab Navalgund (41), both residents of Annigeri.

The injured are undergoing treatment at the Karnataka Institute of Medical Sciences here. The police said the driver of the tractor is absconding. A case has been registered at the Hubli Rural Police Station. — Staff Correspondent

Direction to panel

PANAJI: The Divisional Bench of the Bombay High Court in Goa headed by R.M. Lodha on Tuesday directed the State Coordination Committee working on making government buildings and premises disabled friendly, to draft a State policy in this regard in six months.

The directive came in the on-going case pertaining to a public interest litigation in which the State Government on Tuesday filed an affidavit stating that it will make all its 30 buildings disabled friendly in 18 months.

The case will now come up for hearing after six months. — Special Correspondent

New regional manager

BIJAPUR: N.T. Hegde assumed charge as Regional Manager of Syndicate Bank, Bijapur region comprising Bijapur, Bagalkot, Gulburga and Bidar districts, recently.

Mr. Hegde was Chief Manager of Bijapur region.

Man commits suicide

BIJAPUR: Santosh Hegde, 24, a medical representative, allegedly committed suicide here on Monday.

The police said he hanged himself from the ceiling fan in his rented room at Pragatinagar locality. He was reportedly depressed after he lost his bag in a bus. — Staff Correspondent

More KSRTC buses on Chennai route

BANGALORE: The Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) has made arrangements to operate extra buses to Chennai owing to disruption in train services. The KSRTC has also made arrangements to run extra buses from the Bangalore City Railway Station for the convenience of passengers cancelling their train tickets, Raj Kumar, General Manager (Operations), KSRTC, has said.

South Western Railway has undertaken emergency restoration of the track affected by the derailment of the Island Express near Kamasamudra in Kolar district. — Staff Reporter

UAS postpones `Krishi Mela'

Bangalore: The University of Agricultural Sciences, Hebbal, has postponed the "Krishi Mela," which was to be held on the G.K.V.K. campus from October 27 to 30, to November 17 to 20 in view of the heavy rain in Bangalore and the forecast of further rain over the next four days. The announcement was made by the Director of Extension of the university. — Special Correspondent

Ten sentenced in Kamalakar case

Gulbarga: A retired sub-inspector was sentenced to five years' and nine others to three years' rigorous imprisonment in the sensational Kamalakar lock-up death case of 1992.

Gulbarga Principal District and Sessions Judge B.A. Muchchandi read out the judgment on Tuesday. He found retired sub-inspector Veerabhadrappa; B.N. Patil, the main accused; his brothers Mohan, Chandrashekar, Purushottam and Arun; and Siddappa Nilkar, Jagannath Olekar, Anil Narote and Premkant Keshri guilty of various crimes including torture, illegal custody, kidnap, unlawful assembly with lethal weapons and conspiracy. — Staff Correspondent

200 libraries to be opened in villages

BANGALORE: Minister for Primary and Secondary Education R. Ramalinga Reddy on Monday announced that the Government will open 200 libraries in villages on the occasion of the late Prime Minister Indira Gandhi's birth anniversary next month. He was speaking at Kannada Sambhrama, an event to mark the inauguration of the publication wing of the Press Club of Bangalore here.

Chief Minister N. Dharam Singh inaugurated the event and released six books authored by club members. — Staff Reporter

VTU to set up training centre

BANGALORE: Uwe Freyer, Manager, Franchise Training Centre, Bosch Rexroth, Germany, and S.G. Keishikar, General Manager, Bosch Rexroth (India), on Monday visited the Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU) campus to hold discussions on a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to be signed on Thursday.

The VTU proposes to set up a state-of-the-art VTU-Bosch Rexroth International Training Centre here in industrial drives and controls.

Initially, the training centre will impart training in industrial hydraulics, pneumatics, programmable logic controllers, sensorics, mechatronics and robotics, according to a press release. — Staff Reporter

Internet training for students

BIJAPUR: "Students' Internet World - 2005," a four-day Internet training programme for schoolchildren, will begin here on Wednesday.

As many as 105 computers have been installed in the zilla panchayat meeting hall. The departments of Education and Information Technology and Biotechnology, the zilla panchayat and the district administration are organising the programme with the help of the National Informatics Centre. Deputy Director of Public Instruction Bhaskar Bhat said 6,000 students from different taluks will participate in the programme in batches. — Staff Correspondent

Traffic disrupted

CHIKMAGALUR: Members of the Karnataka Growers Federation, the Vahana Balikedarara Sangha and the Badige Vahana Malikara Sangha blocked traffic on Kadur-Mangalore State Highway on Tuesday in protest against the delay in taking up road repairs in Chikmagalur district. They staged the rasta roko in Kottegahara, Banakal and Mudigere for about 30 minutes each disrupting traffic.

There was an altercation between the agitators and the police in Mudigere, and M.P. Kumaraswamy, MLA, intervened and placated them.

He told them that he would take up the issue in the Assembly if action is not taken. — Correspondent

Free cancer camp

CHIKMAGALUR: Anil Thomas, a specialist in treatment of cancer, said here on Monday that health consciousness among the people was increasing in proportion to the medical facilities available.

Inaugurating a free cancer detection camp organised by the Rotary Club and Inner Wheel Club of Chikmagalur and Preethi Cancer Centre and Bharat Cancer Hospital in Mysore, Dr. Thomas said that cancer was curable if detected in the early stages. — Correspondent

Fine imposed

CHIKMAGALUR: The Transport Department and the Food and Civil Supplies Department jointly examined about 70 cars here on Tuesday to detect illegal use of LPG cylinders meant for domestic purposes. As many as 13 cylinders were seized and the car owners asked to pay fine.

The Transport Department officials said a drive will be launched to check autorickshaws soon. — Correspondent

G. Narayana to head Janapada Parishat

BANGALORE: G. Narayana, former President of the Kannada Development Authority and former Mayor of Bangalore, has been unanimously elected President of the Karnataka Janapada Parishat. He succeeds founder President of the parishat H. L. Nage Gowda, who died recently. The executive committee of the parishat has elected former IAS official T. Thimme Gowda as Executive President. — Staff Reporter

Tension in Malur after Dalit's murder

Kolar: Tension prevailed in Malur on Tuesday after a group of youths, mainly students, threw stones at buildings and tried to set vehicles on fire. According to sources, they were holding a demonstration after the murder of a Dalit, Muniraju (30) at Bennagatta village on Monday night. At least 10 vehicles were damaged. The police resorted to a mild lathi-charge to disperse the protestors. B. Munireddy, Deputy Superintendent of Police, Kolar who is camping in Malur, said the situation was under control.

Special trains to Tiruchchirapalli

BANGALORE: South Western Railway will run special services between Bangalore and Tiruchchirapalli to clear the rush during Deepavali. Train no. 0651 Bangalore-Tiruchchirapalli Special, which will run on October 28 and 30 and November 1, 3 and 5, will leave Bangalore at 10 p.m. and arrive at Tiruchchirapalli at 8 a.m. the next day. Train no. 0652 Tiruchchirapalli-Bangalore Special will leave Tiruchchirapalli at 10.30 p.m. and arrive in Bangalore at 7.45 a.m. the next day. The train will have services from Tiruchchirapalli on October 29 and 31 and November 2, 4 and 6. — Staff Reporter

MLA favours teaching of English

TUMKUR: K.S. Kiran Kumar, Bharatiya Janata Party MLA from Kallambella in Tumkur district, said on Tuesday that he favours the introduction of English as a compulsory subject from first standard in government primary schools. Handing over computers to Sakharata Mahila Mandali High School at Guruvapura in C.N. Halli taluk in the district, Mr. Kumar said children from poor families, who go to government schools, will be severely handicapped if they are denied a chance to study English. In the interest of social justice, the Government should provide equal opportunities, he added. — Staff Correspondent

Five-kg tumour removed

Bidar: Doctors at Prayavi Hospital removed a tumour weighing five kg from the stomach of a 35-year old woman in Bidar on Monday. A team of doctors, led by senior surgeon S.S. Narasanagi, performed the surgery that lasted over four hours. The tumour had grown over a year, and the patient, an employee of a school, suffered severe pain. — Staff Correspondent
