Onion costs dear

ERODE : The price of Bellari variety onion (big size) has already risen to Rs 27 a kg and it is not available in the market. But only small onion is available, which is selling at Rs 12 a kg against Rs 8 a kg sold three days back. The demand for the same is on the increase.

Similarly tomato prices have also increased to Rs 14 a kg. Wholesale tomato traders said that due to heavy rain and flood in Dharmapuri and its surrounding areas, arrivals had been affected. Similarly the prices of all vegetables have increased by Rs 2 to Rs 4 a kg. - Staff Reporter

Life sentence for seven

Salem: A Fast Track Court sentenced seven persons to life imprisonment for their involvement in a murder case here on Tuesday. According to the prosecution, Kumaresan (22), a resident of Dadhagapatti, with the help of his six friends, stabbed Nandakumar (22) of Arunachalam Street to death due to previous enmity, in May 2004. After hearing the arguments, judge Mohammed Ali sentenced Kumaresan and his friends to life imprisonment.

Rain continues in Tuticorin dt.

Tuticorin : Rain continued to lash many parts of Tuticorin district for the fourth consecutive day on Tuesday.

According to Disaster Management and Mitigation Department sources, the 19 rain gauge stations situated in the district in toto recorded 140 mm rainfall in the lst 24 hours ending at 8 am on Tuesday.

Following are the amounts of rain recorded at various places: Kazhugamali — 7.4 mm; Vilathikulam — 6 mm; Kadalkudi — 40 mm; Soorangudi — 1 mm; Vyppar — 3 mm; Ottapidaram — 4 mm; Maniyachi — 5 mm; Vedanatham — 29 mm; Keela Arasadi — 12 mm; Kovilpatti — 5 mm; Kayathar — 5 mm; Kadambur — 4 mm; Ettayapuram — 11 mm and Tuticorin — 7.6 mm. — Staff Reporter.

DGP visits Pasumpon

Ramanathapuram : The Director General of Police, Alexander, on Tuesday visited Pasumpon and reviewed security arrangements in view of the Thevar guru puja scheduled for October 30.

Accompanied by K.V.S. Moorthy, ADGP and Ramanujam, ADGP (intelligence), he discussed security plan with the Inspector General, J.K. Tripathy, (South Zone), the DIG (Ramanathapuram range), A. Alexander Mohan and the Superintendent of Police, J. Rajendran. — Staff Reporter.

TIRUCHI: The level in the Mettur dam stood at 121 feet on Tuesday. The inflow was 1,51,458 cusecs and the discharge 1,69,790 cusecs.

Clarification on bursting of crackers

CHENNAI: Chief Minister Jayalalithaa on Tuesday clarified that the police had been implementing the Supreme Court's direction on restrictions imposed on bursting of crackers during festivals. She said the State Government did not impose the restrictions. In 2001, the apex court had banned bursting of crackers between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m. In a judgment on July 18, it had fixed norms to protect the environment and control noise pollution. However, it had not banned use of fireworks which did not cause noise pollution during the period. Flaying attempts by some persons to create an impression that bursting of all varieties of crackers had been banned, she appealed to the people to celebrate Deepavali without giving room for any confusion or distortion. — Special Correspondent

Train services continue to be disrupted

CHENNAI: Train services between Chennai and Bangalore continued to remain disrupted due to heavy rain and waterlogging on the Jolarpettai-Bangalore section. Train no 2028/2027 Bangalore-Chennai Shatabdi Expresses, train no 2007/2008 Chennai Central-Mysore Shatabdi Expresses, train no 6524/6523 Bangalore-Chennai Central Expresses, train no 2608/2607 Bangalore-Chennai Central Lalbagh Express will not run on Wednesday.

However, train no 2639 Chennai Central-Bangalore Brindavan Express will run via Jolarpettai, Salem and Dharmapuri. — Special Correspondent

Hazardous waste: TNPCB allays fears

CHENNAI: The Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board (TNPCB) on Tuesday allayed fears of the public about the adverse impact of the establishment and operation of a treatment, storage and disposal facility for hazardous waste.

The board said the facility was to ensure that hazardous waste was safely treated and disposed of without any detrimental effect to the environment. It had taken utmost care in identifying the site for establishing the facility. The requisite safeguards for environmentally safe operation of the facility and necessary environment monitoring plans would be in place prior to construction and commissioning. — Special Correspondent

PMK workshop

CHENNAI: A workshop on empowerment of people through local bodies will be conducted by the Pattali Makkal Katchi in Chennai on Friday. The Union Panchayat Raj Minister, Mani Shankar Aiyar, the Union Minister of State for Railways, R. Velu, former civil servants, B.S. Raghavan and A.K. Venkat Subramanian, and G. Palanidurai, member of the Syndicate of the Gandhigram Rural University, are likely to attend the meet.

Film chamber appeal to Chief Minister

CHENNAI: The South Indian Film Chamber of Commerce has appealed to Chief Minister Jayalalithaa to release the subsidy given by the State Government to producers coinciding with Deepavali.

C. Sudarsana Srinivasan, honorary secretary, said the chamber was happy to note that you had fulfilled the assurance given to the Tamil film industry by sanctioning the subsidy of Rs. 5 lakhs for the pictures released between 2000 and 2002 and Rs. 7 lakhs for 2003-04 to make up Rs. 6.76 crores for 114 films for 2000-04.

The SIFCC executive committee meeting held recently in Kozhikode, appreciated the gesture of the Chief Minister. — Special Correspondent
