HYDERABAD: The Congress has strongly denied the Telangana Rashtra Samithi leaders' charge that it has been trying to engineer a split in the TRS. The allegations by Union Minister A. Narendra against Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy and the Government's political advisor K.V.P. Ramachandra Rao reflected the TRS bankruptcy and its failure to contain dissidence within the party. The TRS leadership would do well to set its house in order instead of levelling baseless charges against the Congress, the party said. Addressing a press conference here on Tuesday, Congress MLAs led by Information Minister Mohammad Ali Shabbir, said Mr. Narendra's "baseless allegations" were part of the party's attempts to divert the attention of the Telangana people from the internal controversies surfacing in the TRS everyday.
Cheap politics
While the Congress still treated the TRS as its ally in the State, the TRS did not reciprocate properly and went ahead with contesting independently in the municipal elections only to receive a severe drubbing. "The TRS will not remain on the political horizon if it continues with its cheap politics," they said. They asked the TRS leadership to clarify its stand on dissident MLA S. Santosh Reddy's challenge asking the party's elected representatives to quit and go to the people again. At a separate press conference, Congress leaders-- Paladugu Venkat Rao, M. Kodanda Reddy and D. Nagender-- advised Mr. Narendra to behave in a more dignified manner, and said the PCC was preparing a report to explain to the Congress high command about the "mischief" being played by the TRS.
