Fierce exchange of fire between extremists, police for 15 minutes

  • Police stumble across Maoists during routine combing exercise
  • All three aged between 25 and 30 years
  • Bodies yet to be identified

GUNTUR: Three Communist Party of India (Maoist) naxalites were killed in an encounter with a special party of the Guntur police on the outskirts of Guthikonda village in Guntur district on Tuesday morning.

The Guntur police were engaged in a fierce exchange of fire for 15 minutes at Bodu on Guthikonda-Gullapalli road close to the Guthikonda village in Piduguralla mandal. While on a routine combing exercise, the police party stopped some suspiciously moving persons before dawn and asked them to surrender to the police.

Instead of surrendering, they opened fire on the police party forcing the Piduguralla Sub-Inspector Police and others to open fire, the Guntur police said. When the gunfire stopped, the police went to the spot and found three male bodies along with three tapanchas and some personal belongings of three youths in the age group of 25 to 30.

The bodies have been brought to Guntur Government Hospital mortuary, but they could not be identified. The locals said while two of the victims belonged to Domalagunda in Bollapalli mandal, one of them was from Petasenigallapalem and he was Ganesh.

The police did not, however, confirm the name. This is the second such encounter at the same place in the recent times. In the past two months the Maoists have stepped up their activity in this region killing two persons from the village, one of whom was a Panchayat Board member.
