Gujarat elections largely peaceful

Special Correspondent

GANDHINAGAR: Barring stray incidents of violence, including private firing, polling for elections to 23 district panchayats, 209 taluk panchayats and 49 municipalities in Gujarat ended peacefully on Tuesday. Initial reports indicated a turnout of 45-50 per cent.

At least one person was injured in stabbing in Petlad and another was hurt in firing at Anand. There were also reports of private firings in Junagadh, Patan, Radhanpur and some other parts. The police resorted to a lathicharge following a group clash in Kutch over complaints of bogus voting.

The Congress has filed complaints with the State Election Commission of booth capturing and bogus voting by BJP supporters in dozens of districts and taluk panchayats. Commission sources said re-polling could be ordered in over 100 stations. Counting is scheduled for Thursday.
