JAIPUR: Former Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot on Monday launched a campaign here to collect funds for the earthquake victims in Jammu and Kashmir. He addressed a gathering of prominent citizens to seek contributions to the Prime Minister's National Relief Fund. At the first meeting itself, Mr. Gehlot received commitments from citizens, brought together by the NGO Bharat Sewa Sansthan, amounting to Rs.11 lakh. "Rajasthan people have always been forthcoming on such occasions,'' Mr. Gehlot said. Mr.Gehlot, who is the Congress general secretary in charge of the party front organizations, asked the workers to go around with sealed boxes and collect contributions ranging from Re.1 to Rs.100 from the public in the State. This would not only help to raise funds for relief but also would spread awareness among the people on the plight of the quake victims in Jammu and Kashmir, he said. "The rest of India should tell the people of Jammu and Kashmir that we are with them in this hour of crisis,'' he said. Mr. Gehlot said a similar collection was made in Jodhpur last week during a "kavi sammelan'' forming part of the birth centenary celebrations of the late Prime Minister Lal Bhadur Shastri. An amount of more than Rs.10 lakh was collected for the Prime Minister's National Relief Fund there itself, he informed.
