Uttar Pradesh
LUCKNOW: The Congress on Tuesday slammed Samajwadi Party leader Amar Singh for his ``derogatory''remarks on Uttar Pradesh Governor T V Rajeswar, saying they were an insult to the constitutional post. Reacting sharply to Mr Singh's statement that the Governor was interfering in the day-to-day functioning of the state government, Uttar Pradesh Congress chief Salman Khurshid said, ``Such comments only show how the SP treats an important pillar of Indian democracy.'' Mr Khurshid said Mr Singh's comments proved that the State Government was getting increasingly wary of its performance on various fronts. ``The Governor does not belong to any party ...anyone from a common man to leaders of opposition parties can approach him with their problems and apprehensions,'' he said. He said if Chief Minister Mulayam Singh Yadav did not support Mr Singh's remarks against the Governor, then he should air his views publicly. ``But if he does not, it indicates that Mr Singh has the support of the Chief Minister,'' he added. On the SP leader's allegations that the Raj Bhawan was tapping the phones of party leaders, Mr Khurshid said Mr Singh's claim proved that he too was spying on the activities of the Governor's house. The U.P. Congress chief claimed that while the Governor was capable of defending himself against such onslaughts, it was necessary to protest against such ``outbursts''. Mr Khurshid today sent Congress MLC R S Judev to the Raj Bhawan to register his party's protest against such statements by a ruling party leader. The UPCC also announced that it would launch a protest against the ``misrule'' and ``blatant corruption'' of the SP-led Government. - UNI
